Cern and Day ‘s relationship had gone back to 1917 when they, with Charles W. Miller, formed a retail yard, the Day-Miller Lumber Company. The lumber plant was located on the J. H. Callahan Survey in Harris County, three miles southeast of Cypress. The plant was purchased from J. W. Prince, who had earlier operated the sawmill.
