Historicial Development: E. F. Owens and G. V. Palmer owned a sawmill outfit that they had earlier bought from Tom D. Cruce for $1,600, which they built on the land of Mrs. Gertrude Kent, about eight miles northeast of Crockett. Mrs. Kent bought out Palmer's one-half interest in the operation. Cruce sold another sawmill, located about twenty miles east of Crockett, to A. A. Thomason and C. J. Willingham.
