| Historicial Development: | Georgia-Pacific announced in 1970 that it would build a plywood plant and high-speed, small-log sawmill complex. An eleven million dollar investment, nine million alone would be invested in the plywood plant, which would work with southern pine. The facility would be produce an annual capacity of 140 million square feet. It expected to produce thirty million feet annually in lumber and wood chips alone. The mill would create 450 new jobs with an annual payroll of $2,3000,000. This Louisiana-Pacific Plywood Corporation wood-products facility is a spin-off of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, changing names in 1973. The plant was built next to the site of the old Walker County Lumber Company, which burned in 1931.
The plant produced sixty million board feet in 1973.
In 1990, it was listed as having sawmill and studmill, doing wood treatment, OSB, and plywood manufacturing.
W. T. Block reports that Marvin Thompson manages the plant and is assisted by Jerry Stokeld and Sam Cunningham. Its wholesale trade in Texas is supported by a daily plywood production of 950,000 square feet, 100,000 feet from its gang and band saws, and 100,000 feet capacity in its dry kilns. |
