Historicial Development: | William Henry High was interviewed in 1941 about his sawmilling work. He recalled that he worked in the Charlie Koehl sawmill for $.25 a day hauling sawdust in a wheelbarrow from the mill. He stated that it was located near the old Calhoun ferry on Black Creek.
A Walker County history notes that Charles John Koehl (1850-1931), after working in his father's cotton gin and cotton oil business at Riverside, married and moved to Black Creek. He ran a sawmill at the Creek for some years before moving to Huntsville and later New Waverly. |
