Historicial Development: | Richard Reed operated a sawmill in Wood County during the 1870s. It was located in the area of Liberty Hill, later Pine Mills. During Reed's time, the community was known as Reedsville. This mill was the forerunner of the Reed & Fore sawmill enumerated in the Census of 1880 in Wood County. Reed & Fore had a sawmill enumerated in Precinct 6 of Wood County in the Census of 1880. This facility was a steam-powered circular sawmill, generating thirty horsepower. Ten workers were employed. For nine-hour shifts in the winter and eleven-hour in the summers, they were paid daily $1.00 for unskilled labor and $2.00 for skilled. Reed & Fore paid $2,000 total in wages. The sawmill, from $5,500 in supplies and sawlogs, manufactured 1,000,000 feet of lumber, worth $10,000. |
