Historicial Development: | According to Flora G. Bowles' history of Trinity County, Gordon Woodson and R. D. Crow built the county's first sawmill about 1857. It was located about four miles south of Sumpter on Indian Camp Springs. Sumpter, noted Webb, was Trinity County's first seat of government. It was located about four miles east of Groveton. The sawmill of Woodson & Bros was enumerated in the Census of 1860. With a crew of seven men paid total monthly wages of $126, the mill produced 400,000 feet of lumber valued at $5,620 from sawlogs and supplies worth $700.
