Historicial Development: | W. H. Brooks purchased a sawmill from G. P. Damon in 1919 on a mortgage with J. P. Ross Lumber Company. The sawmill was located in 1921 about four miles northwest of Cleveland. A Mrs. W. P. Dammon sold for $444 to Brooks and a man named Moore a sawmill on November 10, 1919. He registered in the San Jacinto Chattel Mortgage Register, on May 23, 1923, a “complete saw mill consisting of engines boilers, sawrigs and carriages and all other property belonging with said mill, such as shafting belts and tools, of every description and all houses and buildings, on the land, with the mill lot on lease on the Andrew Most tract of land in San Jacinto County, Texas, about 31/2 miles north west of Cleveland, Texas.” The mortgage was for $1,340.28 with the 1st National Bank of Cleveland.
In 1924, W. H. Brooks was partnered with H. S. Lilley. They had bought a steam engine and boiler from a C. E. Bazzoon and J. M. Moore, located at Fish Branch in San Jacinto County. They mortgaged these and Moore his cotton gin with the Cleveland State Bank for $230. |
