Historicial Development: | W. D. Morgan of the Morgan Lumber Company, office at Center and mills at Neuville and Clark's Switch, was operating as early as 1907. Morgan Lumber Company may also have had an interest in the Morgan & Hackney lumber company in Center.
In 1908, financial matters began to go badly for Morgan. He mortgaged to John Morrison for $196 about 75,000 feet of lumber at his mill in March. Small pox (illness) terminated operations for the holiday season at the mill in December 1908. The company would sell its planing mill at Clark's Switch to Cravens Lumber two months later.
By the time of the census for the following year, Will D. Morgan was enumerated at Precinct No. 1, residence 19, as a “foreman” in the John R. Harris sawmill on Shelbyville Road in Center.
W. D. Morgan paid his occupation tax to the state and county on January 1, 1907.
The Handbook of Texas noted that Neuville, founded in 1904, was named for a family that had lived in the area since the 1840s. |
