Historicial Development: | Joseph M. Tryon of Houston visited Hardin County in October 1881 to plan construction of a sawmill about five miles north of Kountze, on the new East Texas (Texas and New Orleans) railroad.
He soon sold his interests here, perhaps as early as 1882, to the Noble and Sheldon Lumber Company, who had moved its operations to Plank. The area around Tryon's mill site, however, was later the home of another sawmill site and the town of Tryon, presumably named after J.M. Tryon, supposedly maintained a post office from 1888 to 1893. |
