Historicial Development: | In an oral interview with Vernon L. Beasley, Jesse Travis reported that a Gordon's mill operated in Sabine County about 1928. It was located on Highway 87 about two miles south of Hemphill. The portable sawmill was powered by steam and manufactured broom handles. Gordon built two houses on Housin Bayou. Travis recalled that Gordon used eight to ten mule teams, as many as eight to ten mules pulling a logging wagon. Gordon hired primarily local farmers. |
