Historicial Development: | J C. Hill and M. A. Gary had a sawmill three miles south of Gary in 1900. J. C. Whitney bought 200,000 feet of lumber from the mill in August of that year. Prior bought the mill on the same day for $340. Equipment included the sawmill, the boiler, the engine, eight oxen, and log wagons. On April 24, 1902, George Davidson purchased this mill, located “3 miles S of Carthage,” according to county records, on a mortgage to the Prior Brothers for $1,400. Property included a 44-inch by 14-foot boiler, an 11-inch by 15-inch steam engine, the sawmill carriage, an edger, a blacksmith shop, and other items. |
