Historicial Development: In August, 1903, Mauritzen Bros apparently already a sawmill at Clayton, seven miles west of Carthage. Panola County records reveal that month they mortgaged with Walter & Connally, in the amount of $230, for a 52-inch circular saw. This sawmill at Clayton appeared in the Reference Book of the Lumbermen's Credit Association of 1907. During that year, the Panola County records is a listing for a mortgage filed by J. A. Mauritzen with Walter Connally & Company for a #2 righthand sawmill outfit. The mortgage was in the amount of $310.
