Historicial Development: John Giles owned and operated a small, steam-powered sawmill in Panola County. In 1880, the Census reported that its d capital value was $1,500. With a work force of ten men at peak and four normally, the mill in six full-time months of operation cut 200,000 feet of lumber, worth $2,000, from $1,100 of supplies and sawlogs. The men were paid from $.75 to $2.00 daily for ten-hour shifts, summer and winter, and received $400 total in wages.
