Historicial Development: The legend of the Newton County town known as Fawil is interesting. The story says that the sawmiller, Fonzo A. Wilson, tried to paint his name on a short board in 1906 to hang on the front of his sawmill. He only got as far as his two initials and the first three letters of his surname, however, before he ran out of board. When the railroad came through, “FAWIL” was adopted as the name of the switch installed there. The Fawil mill was possibly a small affair, and it changed hands often. Possible owners after F.A. Wilson were W.E. Gray, John Ramsey, Joe Kinnear, and a Mr. Rayhill.
