Historicial Development: | The Newton Lumber Company, a Garland Anthony operation, built a new mill at Newton in 1947. Texas Logger reported that Greer and Son did some of the logging for Claude Williams. It had a single band headrig, a vertical resaw, and it could cut 40,000 feet daily. The mill normally employed more than 100 workers. The mill was listed in the 1957 Directory of Wood-Using and Related Industries in East Texas. The company was working with cypress in 1957. In 1964, the sawmill was cutting 1,500,000 board feet monthly. The company also was listed in the Directory of the Forest Products Industry 1975.
In 1947, other Garland Anthony mills in Texas included Woodville, Vidor, and Mauriceville.
