Historicial Development: | The Harris Goodwin owned and operated a small, steam-powered sawmill in Precinct 2 of Marion County. In 1880, the Census reported that its d capital value was $1,400. With a work force of ten men at peak and three normally, the mill in six full-time months of operation cut 200,000 feet of lumber, worth $2,000, from $1,100 of supplies and sawlogs. The men were paid from $1.00 to $2.00 daily for ten-hour shifts, summer and winter, and received $400 total in wages.
The company became G. A. Harris and was located at Kellysville in Marion County during the 1880s. The operation was noted in a railroad directory of 1884. |
