Historicial Development: | W. B. Kizer's Cass County sawmill operated for twelve months during the census year ending May 31, 1880. The work crew fluctuated from nine to fifteen men, who were paid $2.00 to $3.50 daily for ten-hour shifts. Kizer paid out $6,000 total in wages during the reporting period. Kizer contracted for logging, and he shipped his milled product by railroad. In the reporting period, he produced three million board feet, valued at $27,000 from $15,000 worth of sawlogs and supplies.
J. B. Kizer was listed in a railroad directory as having a sawmill at Springdale in 1884. This is probably the same mill as reported in the Census of 1880. J. B. “Buck” Kizer was a brother of W. B. Kizer, and later was a partner with him and brothers Mack and Buff Kizer in the Kizer Lumber Company sawmill at Texarkana. |
