Historicial Development: | Alton and Leo Hicks ran several mills south of Alto. This one, three miles south of town on Highway 69, was a steam-powered sawmill. It added a post-treating plant in 1976. N. Hughes told V. L. Beasley that he remembered that the sawmill was still operating in 1994, although he remembered the owner's name as Allen Hicks. It was cutting lumber, ties, and posts on an electrically-powered circular saw.
Leo Hicks opened a second mill site, about 1983, two miles farther south of Alto. It cuts posts and lumber. |
