Historicial Development: A Grogan forerunner of the later Grogan Brothers Lumber Company at Alto was a peckerwood mill located on the Tom Allen place. Most of the movement of timber, lumber, and product was done by muscle power, horse and human. The company operated a commissary. The operation was listed in Nelson Samson's Directory of Wood-Using and Related Industries in East Texas of 1957. Henry Grogan sold out to Vernon Grogan his share of the Grogan Brothers sawmill for $10, located on Highway 69 between Alto and Rusk. Equipment included an HD-7 Allis bulldozer, a D-4 cat, an International log truck, a log loader, and the sawmill and power plant.
