Historicial Development: Burke & Huddleston accepted a mortgage transfer to W. S. Johnston from Dilley in the amount of $2,116 in 1902 on their equipment. It included a #3 sawmill, a 56-inch saw, an Ames engine, an Ames boiler, a 3-saw Tower edger. This may be the C. M. and E. Burke sawmill. See entry in data base. In 1907, a mortgage record in the county registers reveals that a Burke & Rucker sawmill operated in Cherokee County. This is probably C. M. Burke and M. E. Rucker, the latter a major lumber factor in the area. The firm of Rucker & Burke mortgaged in April, 1907, with W. C. Smith for $2,500 a boiler, a steam engine, a sawmill, a planer and planer sheds, twelve oxen, and two log wagons. This equipment belonged at one time to the Singletary and Huddleston mill.
