Historicial Development: William Buchanan, one of the Old Southwest's great lumber magnates, began his Texas sawmill career in 1873 when he brought his steam, portable sawmill to Texarkana. According to Mayor's Southern Timberman: The Legacy of William Buchanan, “he opened the town's second sawmill [in 1873] to process the trees cleared away to make streets [.]” in the newly-incorporated community.
