Historicial Development: James C. Moore ran a twenty-five horsepower steam sawmill in Bowie County during the census year ending June 1, 1860. During that year he used 1000 cords of wood to produce 1,620,000 feet of “pine railroad ties,” valued at $18,000. Eighty gallons of oil was also used, and it could be that this was used to treat the ties. Raw materials totaled $5,900, with 12,000 logs valued at $4,800, 1,000 cords of wood at $1,000, and 80 gallons of oil at $100. Moore employed fifteen men and one woman, and paid $625 per month in wages, men averaging $40 and the woman $25 monthly. Capital invested was $4000.
