Historicial Development: The Turner-Cummings mill at Manning, Angelina County, appeared in the U.S. Department of Commerce's 1915 directory of sawmills. It cut hardwoods exclusively, and produced wagon and dimension stock for the export lumber trade. The largest size stock the mill could furnish was 12'x14”x12”. This small mill was not in direct competition with the large Carter-Kelley mill at Manning, because Carter-Kelley cut only longleaf pine and Turner-Cummings did not cut any pine, only available hardwoods. In July, 1919, C. N. Cummings and B. P. Turner sold their plant to Martin Wagon Company. The mill was located on land owned by John F. Renfro and owned almost 1,200 acres of stumpage in the counties of Milam, Burleson, and Lee.
