Historicial Development: W. T. Block's oral interview with Drayton Speights, of Hemphill, Texas, revealed that a Jones-Gandy sawmill existed in Sabine County from 1945 to 1950. Originally, the company was founded with J. J. Jones and R. W. Lowe, of Hemphill, as partners. R. W. Lowe sold his share to Philip Gandy and H. L. Gandy. The owners sawed tie mills at three separate locations in Sabine County. They had cut out their timber by 1950. The Jones-Gandy Lumber Company is probably the Jess Jones sawmill of which Mrs. Arbie McGraw informed Vernon L. Beasley. She recalled that it was on Bull Creek along Highway 94, near Hemphill. Mrs. Ona Jones, wife of Jesse, told Vernon L. Beasley that the Jones sawmill was located at Milam on Highway 87 and that it move around.
