Historicial Development: The Directory of Texas Manufacturers, 1956-1958 lists the sawmill of the Cooper Lumber Company with D. A. Cooper at Brookeland. Establishing the firm in 1944, Cooper was manufacturing rough pine and hardwood lumber in 1956. The Beaumont Enterprise noted in 1955 that D. A. Cooper's lumber company had been operating at Brookeland since 1937, cutting 12,000 feet daily. Nelson T. Samson listed the mill in his 1957 edition of Directory of Wood-Using and Related Industries in East Texas. Drayton Speights, a life-long resident and lumberman of Sabine County, recalled that the Cooper Lumber Company was a “small operator” using a gasoline-driven motor for powering the sawmill.
