Historicial Development: The firm of Loomis & Stewart owned and operated a small, steam-powered sawmill in Precinct 1 of Marion County. In 1880, the Census reported that its d capital value was $2,500. With a work force of six men at peak and three normally, the mill in six half-time months of operation cut 120,000 feet of lumber, worth $1,200, from $600 of supplies and sawlogs. The men were paid from $1.00 to $2.00 daily for ten-hour shifts, summer and winter.
