Historicial Development: E.M. Werkheiser's sawmill in Cass County, according to Census records of 1880, operated for six months during the census year ending May 31, 1880. Werkheiser paid from $1.00 to $3.00 per day in wages to ten employees for eleven-hour daily shifts. The normal work crew totaled seven men. The crew received a total wage of $1,500. From $5,500 worth in sawlogs and supplies, the mill produced a million board feet of lumber worth $9,500. Werkheiser did his own logging. The mill was worth $3,000. This may be the E.
