History: The Texas & New Orleans took over the Sabine and Galveston Bay Railroad and Lumber Company. Chartered in 1859, the destination from Beaumont was to be Marshall. By the outbreak of the Civil War, the line had been extended to Pine Island Bayou. Some of the tracks were taken up and used in the fortifications that played an important part in the Battle of Sabine Pass in 1863. After the war, the effort to open a deep port for the agricultural and forest products of the Texas interior continued. Instead of Marshall, the line was eventually built to Dallas by way of Nacogdoches. Rebuilt and working 1876, the Louisiana & Western linked it at Orange in 1881, which extended service from Houston to New Orleans. Both railways merged with Southern Pacific by 1887.
